How to use this checklist
- Print it, or keep it open on your phone, and work room by room.
- Clean from the top of each room down: ceilings, fans and fixtures first, floors last.
- Check each box as you go, then take photos of every room when you are done.
- Walk through the home with your landlord, property manager or agent using the same list.
Room by room
Kitchen
- Empty, wipe and dry the refrigerator and freezer, inside and out, including shelves and drawers
- Clean the oven, racks and broiler drawer
- Degrease the stovetop, burners and knobs
- Clean the microwave inside and out
- Wipe the dishwasher door, edges and filter
- Empty and wipe every cabinet and drawer, inside and out
- Clean countertops and the backsplash
- Scrub the sink and polish the faucet
- Wipe the range hood and its filter
- Sweep and mop the floor, including under the edges of appliances
- Wipe the baseboards
Bathrooms
- Clean the toilet inside and out, including the base and behind it
- Scrub the shower, tub and tile, and the grout lines
- Clean shower glass and doors
- Clean the sink, vanity top and faucet
- Empty and wipe the vanity cabinets and drawers
- Clean mirrors
- Wipe the exhaust fan cover
- Sweep and mop the floor
- Wipe the baseboards
Bedrooms and closets
- Empty closets and wipe the shelves and rods
- Vacuum closet floors
- Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
- Wipe light switches and outlet covers
- Wipe doors, door frames and handles
- Dust blinds and wipe window sills and tracks
- Wipe the baseboards
- Vacuum carpets or sweep and mop hard floors
Living areas
- Dust ceiling fans, light fixtures and vent covers
- Wipe light switches, outlet covers and door handles
- Spot clean scuffs and marks on walls
- Dust blinds and wipe window sills and tracks
- Clean the inside of windows and sliding glass doors
- Wipe the baseboards
- Vacuum carpets or sweep and mop hard floors
Laundry, garage and outdoors
- Wipe the washer and dryer, inside and out, and clear the lint trap
- Sweep the laundry room floor
- Sweep the garage and remove anything left behind
- Sweep the patio or balcony
- Remove all trash and recycling from the home
The last walk-through
- Check that every light works
- Close and latch every window
- Gather keys, gate fobs and garage remotes
- Take dated photos of every room
- Note anything you could not clean and why
